Location

# South of downtown, on a commuter street

The campus sits on the east side of South Church Street (US 221), about 0.45 mile from Morgan Square in a straight line. Most of downtown's new investment lies north and west of it. Nothing is recorded on the campus's own block.

## Getting there

| Item | Record | Status and source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Distance to Morgan Square | about 0.45 mile, straight line Calculated: Great-circle distance from the parcel centroid (34.94399, -81.92817) to Morgan Square (34.949652, -81.932222). | Calculated: City of Spartanburg GIS |
| Traffic on South Church St | 16,900 vehicles a day (2024, SCDOT station 175, US 221 from Crescent Ave to E Henry St) | Public record: South Carolina Department of Transportation |
| Public transit | SPARTA Route 4 runs on South Church Street, with a stop about 250 m south of the parcel; transfers are made only at the Passenger Center downtown. Weekday 6 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-6 p.m., no Sunday service. | Public record: City of Spartanburg; OpenStreetMap contributors |

One bus route with no Sunday service suits a weekday program whose staff or students mostly drive, and a site where some can arrive by bus. It does not make the campus transit-oriented. For a school or training program, parking and drop-off will matter more than the bus.

## What is being built nearby, and how far along it is

Each project's status is as of its latest dated report. Announced and approved projects are not built; only the ballpark is open.

| Project | Status | Status and source |

| Joint City-County Government Center | Under construction on South Church Street: topped out September 2026; about $100 million, funded by a one-cent sales tax; opening 2027. | Secondary source: Fox Carolina; Robins & Morton; Yahoo News (syndicated local report) |
| Fifth Third Park (minor-league ballpark) | Open since April 2025. | Secondary source: Wikipedia |
| Morgan Hotel (152 rooms) and office buildings on West Main | Announced August 2026; no record shows construction under way. | Secondary source: Fox Carolina, 11 August 2026 |
| Former City Hall block, 145 W Broad St (about 220 apartments and a garage) | Approved on first reading in May 2026; no final reading found. | Secondary source: Fox Carolina, 29 May 2026 |
| Morgan Square redesign | Delayed: council debated postponing it in July 2025; no 2026 start found. | Secondary source: Fox Carolina, 15 July 2025 |
| South Church Street corridor | The only recorded work on South Church Street is 2024 landscaping on a stretch south of the campus; no plan or rezoning covers the campus block. | Secondary source: OneSpartanburg, Inc., June 2024 |
| City statement on downtown development | The City described about $800 million of development underway on a handful of blocks west of Church Street (November 2025). Reported totals for the main mixed-use project have moved from about $425 million to about $800 million without a published reconciliation. | Secondary source: City of Spartanburg, 20 November 2025; Fox Carolina, 7 March 2025 |

## What this means for the campus

Downtown's investment is real and close. The ballpark is open, and the government center is going up on the same street. Neither makes this block part of downtown. The large figures describe blocks west of Church Street and north of the campus, and several of the projects behind them are still approvals or announcements.

For an institution the useful facts are more modest: a central, legible address; a street carrying 16,900 vehicles a day (2024) past the entrance; one bus route; and downtown services within a short drive.
